Form as a Mode of Thought: Systems & Strategies for Form Generation
Brooks 318 6.0 creditsM & W 1:30-5:45 pm
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Students in this studio will develop a set of their own strategies and tactics for form generation that move beyond pure intuition and “process” for process’” sake.
We will approach formmaking from two directions: micro to macro; generation of formal elements that build up to compositions and then graphic design artifacts, and macro to micro; formal systems that thread together and overlap which then have repercussions in the details of form. We will also look at formmaking in two contexts, form in isolation and form in application
Learning Objectives
+ Define, utilize and understand systems and strategies to make form.
+ Open up new ways of thinking about making via: 1 new/existing methodologies and 2 new/existing tools and their deployment.
+ Facilitate a discourse about form that is both verbal and visual.
+ Promote dynamic and active participation (exchange, mediation, leadership) in individual and group briefings, work sessions, presen- tations and critiques.
+ Participate in reflective practice by employing tools of self and group assessment: altered/inventive critiques, writing as a diagnos- tic/analytic tool, and web 2.0 tools to extend this reflection in to the larger textual and visual discourse of design.
+ Support a pro-active, aggressive agenda of making and it’s analysis.
+ Foster personal responsibility for a sophisticated overall body of work, the processes and their documentation.
+ Develop a healthy and productive studio environment.
